Determined to end the scathing scourge of cancer epidemic in Anambra State, the Anambra State Association Women in USA. Inc. (ASA Women USA), staged its second biannual Walk for Hope to End Cancer Now at the premises of Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka.
The event was in pursuit of the association’s goal of building a world class comprehensive Cancer Treatment Research Centre in the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital.
The event was held in collaboration with the Anambra State Government of Nigeria. Anchoring on the theme, “Together we hold the key to building a World Class Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Research Centre & Every life deserves world Class Care”. The event also focused on the post care of the 2016 Medical Mission Breast, Cervical & Prostrate Cancer Patients, while creating awareness and educating people about cancer health and fitness as well as recognizing and celebrating cancer survivors.
ASA Women USA is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to raising awareness to issues affecting women, widows, children, youths and physically challenged persons in Anambra State and most importantly, the underprivileged women; through education, early detection and prevention of diseases such as breast, cervical and prostrate cancer.
National President and Founder of ASA Women USA, Dr. Anthonia Uche Umeh in an address at the August event said the proposed cancer treatment centre which will be constructed within the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital premises will be the first and the only Specialised Cancer Treatment Centre in the South East Zone of Nigeria, stressing that it will provide a full spectrum of cancer care including awareness and education, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services and scientific research.
“Our team of medical professionals have seen over 27 thousand men and women and about 17 thousand of them were medically and surgically treated. Breast surgeons from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington DC and Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, both in the USA – in collaboration with the surgical team at the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi and St Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha have performed numerous surgeries in the state,” she stated.
Founded in 2011, the ASA Women USA has been committed to the transformation of Anambra state into a state that provides quality healthcare, a free and safe environment and improved living standards for underprivileged, rural community women, widows, children and youth through innovative and empowerment programs that focus on maternal health, breast, cervical and prostrate cancer awareness among women and men in Anambra State, Nigeria.
