TeKay Designs uplifted Liberian fashion industry in Paris France
Award-winning TeKay Designs (founded by Liberian Fashion Designer Kimma Wreh) showcased Liberian made apparel, accessories and couture bridal gowns at the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Education (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris France. Liberia’s representation at the event was a result of collaboration between TeKay Designs, the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, and Liberia’s Tailors Union. The event, held on 29th of October 2016, was the global edition of Africa Fashion Reception (AFR) that involved diplomats, dignitaries, fashion designers, celebrities, investors, buyers and media from over various African countries in a celebration of cultural diversity.
TeKay Designs showcased two-2 collections at the AFR Paris event: Pride of Liberia collection comprised of Liberian-made tie-dye and country cloth apparel “Pride of Liberia”, and Queen Of The Brides collection with couture gowns representing women of significant social status from various countries around the world. TeKay Designs also managed the Liberian trade exhibition comprising of made in Liberia textiles, apparel, shoes, necklaces, purses, arts and crafts. The Liberian embassy in Paris, France attended the event with full support from Hon. Excellency William Allen (Liberia’s Ambassador to France).
“Liberia’s participation in this event was an effort to promote the Liberian fashion sector in the international community. Liberia has its own textile (country cloth) and we have superb clothing and accessories (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, purses and shoes) made in Liberia. More investment is needed to sustain the Liberian fashion sector and allow for designers to participate in such events going forward. This effort was part of a world tour spanning 3 continents (Americas, Europe and Africa) to educate governments and consumers on Liberian fashion, culture and tourism by showcasing traditional Liberian made apparel and accessories on runway shows and trade exhibitions.” stated Kimma Wreh (Managing Director of TeKay Designs).
