The United State Embassy was opened in Jerusalem on Monday 14th May 2018 along the Gaza border amid protests and bloodshed. Over 55 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,200 others were shot and wounded by Israeli Forces.
While the ceremony was ongoing, thousands of protesters faced Israeli snipers at the Gaza border. Over 40,000 protesters gathered at 13 different locations along the Barbwire fence which separated Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
Despite the bloodshed, the US president Donald Trump maintained that the day was “a great day for Israel” and said that his decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would largely foster peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
“For many years we failed to acknowledge the obvious. The plain reality that Israel’s capital is Jerusalem ” President Trump expressed in a video played at the opening ceremony. ” Our greatest hope is for peace. The U S is committed to facilitating a lasting peace agreement. ”
However the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has another view. He said in a speech in London that ” The United States has chosen to be part of the problem rather than the solution with it’s latest step and has lost it’s mediating role in the peace process”.
The UK’s minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt said that the violence on Monday in Gaza and the West Bank was shocking. And the loss of lives and the large number of injured Palestinians is tragic. ” Such violence is destructive to peace efforts. We have been clear that the UK supports the Palestinian’s right to protect but these protests must be peaceful”.
The Israel’s military said it opened fire to stop Hamas, the Islamist Militant group that controls Gaza, from using the protests as a distraction to break through the border fence and carry out attacks inside Israel. Palestinian Authority accused Israel of carrying out ” a terrible Massacre ” and called for international intervention to stop the killing.
It is worthy to note that around 100 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the protest began six weeks ago. The protesters are demanding THE RIGHT OF RETURN – the right for Palestinians to go back to their fore fathers’ home in what is today Israel.
The US Ambassador to Israel, David M Friedman declared the new embassy open at the ceremony.
