Sweet memories of childhood back home were rekindled while many reconnected to their core Igbo roots recently when Houston played host to women of Nigeria’s Igbo heritage in the United States of America.
Under the umbrella body, Umuada Igbo Association, women of Igbo extraction from the seven Igbo speaking the Nigerian States of Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Rivers and Delta trooped into Houston from across the globe to felicitate and participate in the group’s first international convention.
The three-day event which held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Houston Texas on Saturday July 7, 2018 created a unique platform for Igbo women from across the globe to meet, greet and dine as true Umuada should. It also afforded the women a platform to discuss pertinent issues concerning the welfare and development of their fellow Umuada and the entire Igbo society in Nigeria.
Founder and grand patron of Umuada Igbo Organization, Ezenwanyi Lady Bridget Akazie in an address at the event said the group which is registered in the United States as a non-profit and Non-Governmental Organization seeks to promote and propagate the Igbo language, culture and tradition.
“In other words, to inculcate in our people and children our time-honored enviable family values and extended family system and relationships. Above all, it is incepted to promote peace, progress, unity and camaraderie among our women, families, and Igbos in general.
“The name Umuada Igbo, with all its honor, pomp, and colors, engenders our responsibility and allegiance to our Igbo heritage, culture, and tradition which are the embodiment of our strong and enviable Igbo family values and extended family system”.
The executive leadership of the Houston Texas chapter was also inaugurated during the three days event which was monitored by Excel International Magazine. National President of the group, Lolo Christie Nwaiwu, urged the new executives to use their offices to impact on the lives of their sisters and extend a hand of fellowship to the less privileged in the society.
The highlight of the event was a special fundraising ceremony to support the group’s interventionist programs in Nigeria and to help the less privileged both in the USA and in Nigeria.
